"Talk about it" Eating Disorders

Nearly 20 million females and 10 million males in the U.S suffer from some type of eating disorder. Body image means that someone is struggling with the way they look, and usually in a negative way. These disorders are commonly found in teens, but it can also affect adults as well. A eating disorder is a serious condition (sometimes caused by body image) in which a person is so preoccupied with food and weight that you can't focus on anything else. Everyone's disorders can be different, but the main ones are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. Out of all the issues the teens go through eating disorders and body image is really not talked about as much as other subjects. That is why people need to talk about it and be aware.

I have created a interview asking people there thoughts on this subject.

Questions:
1. Why do you think that people suffer from body image problems and eating disordes
2. What should someone do if they have this disorder
3. Who do you know that has a problem like this
I first ask Sherry Bailey, grade 11, Why do you think that people suffer from body image problems and eating disorders. She says, "I think that people have body image problems because they feel bad about how they look and want to lose weight". Madison Walker, grade 11, said "People have this problem because of how other people make them feel, and tv and models". Asia, grade 12, thinks "its a confidence thing, and they probably have low self esteem"  . All these answers are correct to some degree but what really matters is how to solve the problem which leads us to my second question what should someone do if they have this disorder. An anonymous student says "go to a guidance counselor or therapy, because really helps" Mrs.Hampton says "Tell your parents because they know you personally and can get you help" And Mrs. Sanders says "Pray about it and read inspiration quotes". If people do listen to the advice of these three people, they are sure to find some kind of relief. My final question is "Who do you know with this problem?" To protect people's personal identities the answers were anonymous. Anonymous #1 said that "she doesn't know anyone with this problem" , Anonymous #2 said that her "friend's sister had an eating disorder". Anonymous #3 said that "I myself suffered from this problem, but with the help of others, I was able to over come it".

"The line between overeating and binge disorder is a thin one."  A story on CNN caught my attention very quickly. A high school girl named Natalie started to turn to food to make her feel better. Natalie began to eat when she was sad or mad or even happy, and this soon became a problem. Natalie did not know she had a problem, she just knew she loved food. So how can you tell that you are binge eater? Psychologists say that there is a thin line between overeating and binge eating, so it is very hard to tell. Binge eaters tend to feel very bad after eating a lot. Natalie said that food became and addiction and she could not control it. The way to know that you are not a binge eating is that you don't feel bad if you are eating if you are eating to cover emotion that is binge eating. To stop binge eating you have to eat every few hours to stop feeling hungry but not eating huge portions. This article was sad, but inspirational. Like Natalie, an eating disorder can be cured with the right tools of therapy.

I believe that this subject is tricky and sad for a lot of people to talk about, but that's why I picked it. I think people should be aware of how serious this problem is and someone you know has this problem although they may not tell you or you may not be able to tell. A lot of people don't know what it is to have a eating disorder or a body image problem, so they don't talk about it. I think that if people weren't so cruel to others, we wouldn't have this problem. The media makes people think that big is not beautiful, and if your not really skinny, then you need to lose weight. This leads people to trigger eating disorders. If we could all work together to educate people on this subject, a lot of people would be better off.
