Faculty (and Student) Focus: Giving Back and Points of Pride

As we make the transition to the holidays, it is easy to get caught up in our holiday plans, Black Friday sales, and the discussion of the hectic schedules, deadlines, and plans that loom ahead. However, I have found that as the weather gets colder, people's hearts become warmer, and that people are looking to give back to their communities. This can come in the form of donations of money, time, or talents, or putting others first to help others become successful.
Eastern is no exception. As the faculty advisor for our small little space in the blogosphere, I try to keep a finger on the pulse of what is going on around our school. This helps me to keep tabs of the hum and rhythm of the school, and the words that keep coming back to me are "service" and "success". Ms. Basile and Ms. Worlds have done a great job of promoting service learning here at our school, and I know we are all excited about the continued growth of our program. I want to take a moment to feature some charitable happenings and points of pride throughout our school this semester:

  • Ms. Basile's Native Spanish Speakers course has raised money to assist the Triad Health Project. The money that students and staff contribute goes to help HIV patients have access to healthcare, medicine, food, and clothing. These students also completed translation services for the THP by translating their website and brochure into Spanish. You can continue to provide monetary donations to this project through this Friday during all three lunches.

  • The varsity football team, along with Ms. Whitaker (social worker of EGHS), promoted a successful Red Ribbon week campaign to raise awareness about the advantages of being drug free. Students signed a pledge of solidarity as well. Photo Credit: Ms. Whitaker

  • If you have noticed that the grounds in front of the school look clean and trimmed, you can thank Ms. Canoy's students. These students worked on trimming the shrubbery around the front of the school. Thanks for taking pride in the upkeep of our building!

  • After four weeks of consistent practice, Coach Keener-Jones and her cheerleaders did a fabulous job at their competition last Saturday. The JV squad placed 2nd in the NCHSAA competition, and the varsity cheerleaders are the 2014-2015 state champions! Please congratulate Coach Keener-Jones, Coach Michael, and their amazing squads for their hard work and dedication. Photo credit: Taylor Brinkley

  • Our varsity football team made it to the first round of state playoffs at Terry Sanford HS in Fayetteville. While it was quite cold and while the scoreboard did not turn out to our favor, our coaches and players worked tirelessly all season long. We look forward to an exciting season next year.

  • Ms. Worlds and Ms. Basile have taken our service learning meetings to the Internet. If you or someone you know is interested in a service learning diploma or opportunities, then please log into your Edmodo account and join the EGHS Service Learning Group. The code to join is haecqe.

  • Ms. Crider's journalism students are in the process of completing a brochure for our school. The purpose of this brochure is to showcase all of the amazing qualities EGHS has to offer students and staff. Once the brochure is created and approved, it will be translated into several languages for the convenience of our wonderfully diverse population. This publication will feature performing and dramatic arts, athletics, service opportunities, and academics. We are excited about this project!

If you or your class is doing anything to brighten the corner where you are, please send photographs and a quick blurb to criderh@gcsnc.com and we will be happy to feature your story. Please be sure to caption your photographs and provide first and last names.

Is an HBCU for You?

A HBCU is a Historically Black College University.

This week, I embarked on the opportunity to tour 10 different HBCU's. These included Virginia State, Virginia Union, Bowie State, Morgan State, Howard University, Delaware State University, Maryland Eastern Shore, Hampton University, Norfolk University, and Elizabeth City State University. Some of these colleges were private institutions and some were state colleges, but all have high standards and made it clear how important your SAT and ACT scores were as well as ones GPA in the process of acceptance.
Virginia State and Virginia Union were of course in Virginia, Howard is in Washington DC , Bowie and Morgan both in Maryland and Elizabeth City in NC, the closest to home. I learned some of the things you should look for in preparing to pick a college. First, you should actually get accepted , then make sure to tour the campus and see if you could imagine yourself being there. Then look at the scholarships offered. Research the weather, because obviously if you don't like the cold you shouldn't go to a college in the Arctic, and if you hate the heat you shouldn't go to a college in California. Lastly, you should see if they have the major you want to pursue. You shouldn't go to college for something you're not interested in doing.
All of these colleges have a limit for scholarships. Most were a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and a 800 SAT score, but remember this is only minimum requirements for acceptance without scholarship. All of these colleges offered internships and studying abroad. There is a fun side of college as well like the different sororities and fraternities and of course the parties, but in order to be successful, we have to put our school work first. I learned a lot on my trip, and my personal favorites were Howard University and Morgan State. I highly recommend you consider any of these colleges in your search for your college, as they offer great education and a family environment.

Learning about ESOL at EGHS

                                                                  ESOL CLASS

ESOL stands for  English Speakers of Other Languages. It is a course for students whose first language is not English. Students can improve their listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and writing skills by taking ESOL classes. Our school (Eastern Guilford High School) has ESOL classes for students who were not born in America. Many of the students taking ESOL classes help them improve their English. It helps students perfect their English. Students who were not born in America need to take this class to enhance their understanding of English in their other courses.. ESOL teachers help us to do projects in other courses and they can help us with material in other classes. It is a great resource for students like me to work with teachers to help me become the best student possible.

Remembering Holidays

What are holidays really about?
Is to celebrate Jesus, veterans, a loved one
Or for Santa being a good spout?

From New Years to Martin Luther
For us to explore
To Chinese, Groundhog Day
And way much more

What month is it?
Oh its November
Two holidays for me
Both to remember

From my birthday, to thanksgiving, there's so much to do
A special holiday just me and you
Friends and family over
To dive in
Into such wonderful food, oh where do I begin

Holidays are meant for a day to remember
Starting at January, then ending in December
Feast out, pig out, do what you want
Go shopping, go skiing
Any and everyone

So Remember
Whatever holiday it is
Whether your a grown man, woman, or just plain kids
Holidays are a days to remember

DJ De'Aundre's Top 5 of 11.14.14

DJ De'Aundré's Top 5

1."Break The Rules" by Charli XCX

This song basically epitomizes how a modern teenager doesn't want to go to school ; just want to have fun and cause trouble. I think everyone should listen to this song because it shows that you don't have to be serious all the time and that there is a time to have fun.

2."We Are Here" by Alicia Keys

I love this song because of two reasons. Reason one because it's an Alicia Keys song. Reason two because of the message portrayed in the song. Alicia Keys is well known for the messages she portrays in most of her songs and this song takes the cake. It basically mentions that we are here for each other and we are here to help each other through tough times.

3."All The Way" by Timeflies
I love Timeflies; whenever I'm in a bad mood all I have to do is listen to a cover or an original song and I'll be ok. This song in particular helps my mood a lot; mainly the music around it. The main thing I like about Timeflies is that they have instrumentals in between the chorus and verses. This will keep you moving and jumping no matter what.

4."Don't Be Gone Too Long" by Chris Brown ft Ariana Grande
Chris Brown and Ariana Grande; I never thought I would see these two work together. These two are amazing, singers but when they work together they make an amazing song that you can't stop listening to. If they ever make anymore songs together my phone would run out of memory. This song mainly talks about how much you miss your lover if they are gone too long.

5."Millenia" by Crown The Empire
My friend has got me hooked on this song I didn't even know about this band until a month ago and I love everyone of their songs. This is my go to song whenever I feel like I want to just ignore the world around me. It also my go to song when I have an upcoming test or quiz because it helps me study. I think people should listen to this song because it is amazing and it will cure any type of feelings that aren't happy ones and obliterate them.

Time Has a Limit

T: The dimension and measurement in which events can be ordered from past to present & into the future.

I: Irresponsible use of time can bring struggle, stress, and an unhappy life.

M: Many people take advantage of time and only realize it when its too late.

E: Everlasting, eternal, endless time?

THERE IS NO SUCH THING

With all that one does in a day, time management comes in handy. However, not everyone has that skill, or hasn't quite mastered it yet! Everyone lets time overwhelm their minds. There is no age limit. Children stress about time without realizing it, With schoolwork, and home responsibilities. Simple responsibilities such as, picking up their toys when their parents ask them to. Teenagers are overwhelmed with stress constantly! The list for one teen could go a mile long. Time Management is needed even more once you reach a certain age. It would be beneficial to you and others if you learned that as a young adult. So that when you reach your adult years. You can manage you time wisely. So you could be more efficient in your career, your family, your responsibilities, in your everyday lifestyle. We don't have forever to do everything we wish to do in our life. You may have heard someone tell you that you have a lifetime to do this, or that. However, I'm sure you've heard the saying "Time isn't forever". A lifetime has to have a limit. We have a time to live our life and that is called a lifetime. The expression is just a way to get someone to slow down, but what you do with your time is what you choose. You can live your life long, short, fast, slow, young, old, it doesn't really matter. We all have a limit.

Yikes! Two window washers hang onto life as they hang 68 stories high in the air!

"That was a close one", is what rescue workers and the public are saying after two window washers were dangling from the 104 story world trade center. The two window washers were identified as Juan Lizama and Juan Lopez; they were both doing a routine cleaning when something went wrong. It seems that while the two mean were cleaning that one of the cables of the hanging platform begin to develop a slack, which left it suspended in the air in an almost vertical position.

"I see two heads dangling over the scaffolding and one of the guys-- they just keep looking down", is what witness, Reginald Moye, told CNN news. Up to this point authorities don't know what could've caused the platform to slack, luckily the two men were wearing harnesses when the incident occurred. Yet it was no easy task having to get both men out of the hanging platform. Rescue workers had to use a diamond saw to cut through one of the nearest windows.

The reason being that this specific saw had to be used is because the rescue workers had to cut through three layers of glass panes which is almost two Inches. Both men were pulled safely from the hanging platform and into the World Trade Center building. No harm came to either men, except a slight hyperthermia; both were released from the hospital on the same night the incident happened on Wednesday November 12, 2014.

When Juan Lopez was interviewed, one of the window washers, he said "In the beginning it was panic". Yet he and Juan Lizama begin to remember their safety training. "We knew that everything and everybody was safe around us, beneath us. Once I saw the fire department and the New York police inside, it was just a matter of time". All in all both men were very happy to be safe; they including said that they will return to work, but preferably on a lower floor level.

The Honey Badger

The Honey Badger

Tyrann Mathieu

James-Anthony Artis

Tyrann Mathieu is formally known as “the Honey Badger” for his fearless football mind set as a 5’9 165 pound FS/CB. Mathieu has marvelous ball hawking skills and a play-making mentality. As a sophomore, Mathieu was already a high ranked candidate for the Heisman. Even though it took a lot of perseverance to get there, Mathieu failed several of drug tests and was suspended twice, so he had to miss his junior and senior season playing for LSU. However, this did not stop him though, because he had strong role models to help him. With aid from NFL all-star corner back Patrick Peterson and his father, Mathieu got back on track to greatness and worked hard everyday for it. Then in the 2013, NFL draft Mathieu was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the 3rd round, 7th pick, and 69th over all. Now Mathieu starts as the free safety for the Cardinals.

More Nigerian Trouble

More Nigerian Trouble

You are found in the hospital in a small bed that can barely hold you. All around the small room, there are many other students just like you with grave injuries in beds. As the number of students being admitted to the hospital grows, the place has become so overcrowded that there are sometimes 2 in a bed. You cannot seem to remember what happened to you so you ask your friend, who is in the bed beside you. She explains about how your university was bombed and many students have died. This happened to the Yobe state in Nigeria, where violence like this has been common for a consecutive 5 years.

Only some of the rubble of the university is shown

On November 10, 2000 students gathered for a weekly assembly, waiting for the principal to speak to them when a suicide bomber blew himself up on Monday. 48 students were killed and 79 are injured. The bombings came a a week after a suicide attack in Potiskum, capital of Yobe state, killing 30. The 79 injured students have been admitted to a hospital, where the injuries are so severe that some may require amputations. The hospital is so overcrowded that some patients are crammed 2 to a bed.

A funeral is organized for the victims of the suicide bomb explosion

"We were waiting for the principal to address us, around 7:30 a.m., when we heard a deafening sound and I was blown off my feet. People started screaming and running. I saw blood all over my body," 17-year old student Musa Ibrahim Yahaya said from hospital bed as he was being treated for head wounds.

It is suspected that the bombing was related to the Nigerian Islamic Group Boko Haram, the same group who kidnapped school girls in April and have now sold them off as wives. Boko Haram has targeted school during a 5-year insurgency aimed at establishing an Islamic State. The bomber was disguised as a university student in school uniform. It was reported that he had tried to hide explosives in the pupil's backpacks. Luckily, the Nigerian military had found the explosives sowed into the book bags and have been disarmed.

The school has been criticized by many angry parents, who claim that they should have fenced the school in and should have kept a better watch on the students. Many are even angry at the President Goodluck Johnathan, who has been silent through the ordeal. The Yobe State Government has ordered immediate closure of all government schools near the destroyed school areas. But will this stop Boko Haram, who terrorizes others and still runs free throughout Nigeria.

Nicki Minaj or Nazi Regime

Nicki Minaj has recently released a lyric video for her song "Only."  Many feels as though the video resembles Nazi imagery. The video features an army of soldiers with red arm bands featuring a logo. The logo is "YM" which stands for Young Money which is the name of her record label. Many people feel as though the logo is close in comparison to the Swastika symbol. Nicki didn't hears about this until she landed back in the USA from performing at the EMA's(European Music Awards). Nicki Minaj has apologized to those who were offended, she tweeted "I take full responsibility if it has offended anyone. Id never Condone Nazism in my art. On the other hand her director, the man who cam up with the idea, of the video, Jeffery Osborne, who comes from Jewish decent feels the exact opposite. Jeffery told MySpace, "First, I'm not apologizing for my work, nor will I dodge the immediate question. The flags, arm bands, and gas masks(and perhaps my use of symmetry?) are all representative of Nazism." Jeffery also said, "As far as an explanation, I think its actually important to remind younger generations of atrocities that occurred in the past as a way to prevent them from happening in the future, And the most effective way of connecting with people today is through social media and pop culture. So if my work is misinterpreted because its not a sappy tearjerker, sorry I'm not sorry, what else is trending?" What do you think? #SakiCelebNews

Fun Fact: Many people may not know this but the original meaning of the swastika is "lucky or well being." The Symbol is still used as a religious symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism.

CAUTION: Strong language in video
