A HBCU is a Historically Black College University.
This week, I embarked on the opportunity to tour 10 different HBCU's. These included Virginia State, Virginia Union, Bowie State, Morgan State, Howard University, Delaware State University, Maryland Eastern Shore, Hampton University, Norfolk University, and Elizabeth City State University. Some of these colleges were private institutions and some were state colleges, but all have high standards and made it clear how important your SAT and ACT scores were as well as ones GPA in the process of acceptance.
Virginia State and Virginia Union were of course in Virginia, Howard is in Washington DC , Bowie and Morgan both in Maryland and Elizabeth City in NC, the closest to home. I learned some of the things you should look for in preparing to pick a college. First, you should actually get accepted , then make sure to tour the campus and see if you could imagine yourself being there. Then look at the scholarships offered. Research the weather, because obviously if you don't like the cold you shouldn't go to a college in the Arctic, and if you hate the heat you shouldn't go to a college in California. Lastly, you should see if they have the major you want to pursue. You shouldn't go to college for something you're not interested in doing.
All of these colleges have a limit for scholarships. Most were a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and a 800 SAT score, but remember this is only minimum requirements for acceptance without scholarship. All of these colleges offered internships and studying abroad. There is a fun side of college as well like the different sororities and fraternities and of course the parties, but in order to be successful, we have to put our school work first. I learned a lot on my trip, and my personal favorites were Howard University and Morgan State. I highly recommend you consider any of these colleges in your search for your college, as they offer great education and a family environment.
