Can you tell them apart?
Lucy Aylmer and her twin sister Maria Aylmer have never had a problem with people telling them apart. They live in Great Britain and 100% of the time no one ever believed they were twins in the first place. Lucy and Marias mother is half-Jamaican and half-white while their father is British. Donna their mother said the midwife(at home nurse) was in pure shock when she gave birth.
Lucy has fair skin and ginger hair, Maria on the other hand has caramel skin and dark brown hair. the Aylmer sisters have 3 additional siblings who all have mixed skin color, but Lucy and Maria are dizygotic twins which means they're fraternal. Lucy says "No one believes we are twins because I am white and Maria is black, Even though when we dress alike, we sill don't even look like sisters, let alone twins. Friends have even made us produce our birth certificates to prove it."
Nonetheless Lucy and Maria are close as can be and love each other to the fullest. Lucy concluded "But Maria loves telling people at college that she has a white twin-and I'm very proud of having a black twin."
Make a Wish Come True
Make a Wish Come True
Imagine
you had a 5 year-old daughter/son whom you love with all your heart. You take
him/her to your family doctor for your child’s routinely check-up every 4
months. Soon after your child’s check-up, the doctor diagnoses your child with
a serious case of leukemia/lymphoma/brain cancer and they only have a short
period of time to live. This news breaks your heart, knowing that there is
almost no chance of your young child beating that illness. When you explain
this to him/her, they have a big wish that they would’ve wanted more than
anything in the world: getting a chance to go to Disney World. You want to do this
for them, yet you are not sure where you are going to get the money for
something as big as Disney World. Don’t forget you have to pay for the child’s
health insurance. The solution: the Make-a-Wish Foundation is your best way to
go.
- A wish come true empowers children with life-threatening medical conditions to fight harder against their illnesses.
- Nearly 75% of all wish experiences involve travel
- As of August 2012, the average cost of a wish was $8,141.
- The person who holds the title for most wishes granted is American wrestler John Cena, granting 450 wishes.
- A combined 89 percent of doctors, nurses and health professionals surveyed say they believe a wish experience can influence wish kids’ physical health.
- The average cost of a wish $6,450.
- Make-A-Wish doesn’t consider a family’s financial status.
- Children feel less isolated from their friends, and feel a return of self-confidence that comes with feeling normal again.
- Parents and medical professionals alike describe the wish experience as a frequent turning point in wish kids’ battles for health.
- Found in 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation is the largest wish-granting organization in the world. It was founded in Phoenix, Arizona.
Did
you know that Make-A-Wish has established a North Carolina chapter? Yes, North
Carolina has a Central and Western Make-A-Wish chapter? North Carolina’s
chapter has passed through 30 years of granting wishes. Just like most of the
other chapters, North Carolina’s local chapter has been doing great granting wishes
to represent this state. On January 30th, 16-year old teen Austin
Edwards is getting his wish of going to the Super Bowl. He’s battles cystic
fibrosis and can’t wait for his 2016 trip to the Super Bowl.
I
liked the intentions of Make-A-Wish Foundation every since I was little. It
always made me feel happy to see a small child get their wish fulfilled when
that kid gets to go to their favorite teams’ sports game, getting to go to
Disney World. It made me feel joy that their life wasn’t all in vain. I think
people who love children can help donate to this organization because it’s sad
to see a small child have a terminal cancer and die from it in a short period
of time. It can make people, even children, feels sad knowing that the child
with the condition wouldn’t get a chance to grow up. It even breaks of hearts of celebrities who
grant the wishes of the child. I am also a lover of small children, so every
time I hear about a young child’s death, my heart starts to hurt because it
makes me think of my younger brothers, 12 and 9. What if they got cancer? Would
it be terminal? Would they ever be the same again? So why not donate to
Make-A-Wish? You help make the wishes of young children come true.

No means No...Prevent Sexual Assault
One…Two…Three…Four. Every 107 seconds someone is sexually assaulted in the U.S. When someone is sexually assaulted they are forced into sexual activity when they don’t consent to it; this issue is something that not only plagues the U.S, but the whole world in every moment of every day. Sexual assault is something that truly speaks to me because as a person, when your sexually assaulted not only are they taking away something that belongs to you, but their also taking away the person you used to be. When we hear the stories of these people; men and women, we are able to see the scars and the brokenness reflected on their faces, but nothing compares to the real hurt they have experienced. This is an issue that I was really interested in not only because it’s an issue that plagues our society, but also because I once knew someone who had gone through this experience. Now that we’re seeing it more and more it looks to be that a spotlight is actually being shined on this issue. I recently learned of an organization called ‘RAINN’ (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network); this organization helps educate the public on sexual assault, helps prevent sexual assault, and provides services to victims.
A few things to know about this
organization are:
·
RAINN
provides personal support through their hotlines for sexually assaulted victims· Have RAINN Day on the Third Thursday of September to raise awareness
· 92 cents of every $1 goes directly to preventing sexual violence and helping Victims
· RAINN reaches out to the media everyday to update them on statistics and messages about sexual assault.
· To raise awareness they plan RAINN day on colleges around the U.S
· RAINN is partnered with General Mills, ABC Entertainment, Target, and many more
· Have their own personal monthly Newsletter
· Anyone can raise funds for RAINN
· You can volunteer for RAINN
· They provide tips on how to keep safe from sexual assault
March For Babies!
Have you ever seen a baby that has a birth defect?
There a lot of birth defects a baby could have; some common ones are Down
Syndrome, a Congenital Heart Defect, and Patau Syndrome.
There is are a lot of charities that raise awareness for these birth defects,
but one that immediately comes to mind if The March Of Dimes Foundation. For
years upon years the March of Dimes Foundation has held walks to raise
awareness about babies with birth defects.
- The March of Dimes has marches all over the United States.
- The March of Dimes fights to help babies with birth defects.
- The March of Dimes raises money for babies and their family.
- The March of Dimes is a volunteer charity.
- The March of Dimes is helping to solve the mysteries of pre-mature births.
- The March of Dimes has over twenty marches in North Carolina in 2015.
- All the money raised goes to babies with birth defects and their families, not anyone else.
- Kmart has made the largest donations towards The March of Dimes Foundation.
The March of Dimes Foundation has marches all over North Carolina. The March of Dimes is going to have a march in Greensboro, NC on April 25, 2015. Also there is a march in Winston-Salem, NC on April 11, 2015. Another march close to home is in Burlington, NC on May 02, 2015. Also in North Carolina The March of Dimes Foundation is helping moms have full-term pregnancies, which overall will cause healthier babies.
Growing up I have been to a lot of March of Dimes marches. My mom was a manager of Kmart and every year we would go to the march and walk, and walk. This was a great family bonding activity, and it was all helping babies and their families. Next time you think of babies with a birth defects, think of The March of Dimes.
ASPCA: Helping Animals for the Better
Have you ever seen those commercials with the
sorrowful music and the sad face of animals? It may see cliché but those
commercials really touch the heart for a moment. Many animals today are being
treated with so little respect, beaten, and hurt. The ASPCA(American Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is a foundation founded in 1866. It is
one of the oldest pet charities in the New World. ASPCA believes that every
animal should be treated with respect from humans and they that a law should protect
them. They rescue abused animals threw out America. The ASPCA is non-profit and
is privately funded.
- Very well at promoting their cause
- Fight animal cruelty
- Strong charity
- Over 1 million supporters in America
- Great videos about the pets for adoption and their stories
- Pet of the week
- Awareness projects
- Donations
- You can create you own ASPCA fundraising page
- Humane awards
Charlotte and Buncombe County
North Carolina have gotten involved in the ASPCA Charity. The Humane Society of
Charlotte has a mission on improving adoption, maintain animals population and
education those on spay and neutering. The Humane Society of Charlotte strives
to create a loving and caring environment for animals while they wait for a new
loving family to adopt them. Buncombe
County is in partnership with the ASPCA; they aim to increase adoption and
believe it important to show respect for animals.
I have always had a great love and compassion
for animals. Researching charities on those who do this for a living really
shows other people cares too. I think this has really opened this eyes of
student here at EGHS. Many students were very excited to receive the bracelets
and asked many questions. Many students were very happy to hear the charity I
chose was in association with those sad commercials the ASPCA promotes on
television. This has also helped students to have a great appreciation towards
their pets. What an impact the ASPCA has had on Eastern.
